To make a flour mixture, a miller combined soybeans that cost $8.50 per bushel with wheat that cost $4.50 per bushel. How many bushels of each were used to make a mixture of 800 bushels costing $5.50 per bushel?

Let x = number of bushels of soybeans

Let y = number of bushels of wheat

Then,

x + y = 800

and

8.50x + 4.50y = (800)(5.50) = 4400

from the first equation

y = 800-x

Now substitute

8.50x + 4.50(800-x) = 4400

8.50x + 2000 - 4.50x = 4400

4x = 2400

x = 600

y = 800-600 = 200
