y=x+9

3x+8y=-5

May 26th, 2015

the equations can be written as,

y-x=9 .....(i)

8y+3x=-5 .....(ii)

using elimination method, we first eliminate y by multiplying the first equation by 8

(y-x=9)*8

8y+3x=-5

opening the brackets,
8y-8x=72
8y+3x=-5

subtracting the equations;
-8x-3x=72-(-5)
-11x=77, dividing both sides by -11 then,
x=-7

from y-x=9, we can replace the value of x to get y.
y-(-7)=9
y+7=9
y=9-7
y=2
