Another way to make chlorine is to oxidize chloride ion. You have hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and bleach ClO- (aq) + H2O (l) + 2 e- -> Cl- (aq) + 2 OH- (aq) Ered = +0.90 V as oxidizing agents. Which one would you use to oxidize chloride? Give reasons.

H2O2 since it is more powerful oxidising agent. .........................................................

How do you know it is a more powerful oxidizing agent?

Ered for H2O2 is 1.78 >0.90

Now higher the potential higher is oxidising power. Hence H2O2 is a better oxidising agent.

Thank you! I must have looked at the wrong reduction potential table, i thought it was 0.68V
