Description
I would like you to write about the American Civil war.
#1: HISTORY TURNING POINTS
General Overview: Select an event, incident, a legislative action, or related marked historical moment in the years from Reconstruction until today that marks an important transition in American History. This historical event can lead to a social, economic, or political transition that shaped the country's history. Additionally, you will conclude this research project with a supposition of how history might have been shaped had this event never occurred or of another possible outcome could have been possible. Examples: How did the new technology of WWI change modern warfare? What could have been the possible benefits and problems if the Freedman's Bureau continued beyond Reconstruction?Research Objectives & Questions to be Discussed in Your Essay: (Incorporate these questions in the writing of your essay.)- Why did you select this event?
- What were both the short- and long-term effects of this historical event?
- Who all were impacted/affected by this historical event?
- How was history changed by this event?
- If you were to imagine a different outcome or reaction to your event, what do you suppose might have been a different outcome in the short- and long-term?
General Research Essay Requirements
- The essay must include at least one primary AND one secondary source (explanation of the differences can be found here).
- The essay must include one image that is either a primary or secondary document. The image should have a caption of 50-100 words explaining its relevance to the essay project. The image can be embedded within the text essay or attached as a separate page.
- Cite all sources used for research. The preferred citation style for the essay is the Turabian/Chicago style. Paper on Tragedy and American Drama
Question 1) In two paragraphs (totaling about 400 words) discuss the ways in which Willy and Shelly are alike or not alike. Create clear topic ideas and support your ideas with cited quotes from the plays. Respond to two other students when you are done.
question two;
For your paper you are to answer BOTH of the following questions, using the two plays and sources that come from the course. You must cite all you answers using MLA formatting. Use OWL Purdue if you need help with MLA. Also, review the videos in the Plagiarism Module to get some insight into some of the skills and issues invovled in citing a paper using MLA. Submit both answers as one document. Label each prompt as One and Two. Write at least 750 - 1000 words for each paper. Create a Works Cited page at the end of each answer. Again, put both papers into one document that you will upload here.
Prompt One (answer both one and two)
In a 750 - 1000 word, well-paragraphed essay, discuss how Willy and Shelley are or are not examples of tragic heroes. Use quotes from both Miller and Aristotle when defining what a tragic hero is then use quotes from Miller and Mamet's plays, when connecting those ideas to the two characters.
Prompt Two (again answer both one and two and include both answers in one document)
In a 750 - 1000 word, well paragraphed essay, discuss how Death of a Salesman represents a modernist critique of capitalism, while Glengarry Glenn Ross represents a postmodernists critique of capitalism.
Without exception, papers turned after the due date at 11:59, will lose 10 points off the final grade. Please don't wait until the last minute to get your paper in.

Santa Monica College Intersectionality in Society Reflective Essay
Read, "Demarginalizing the intersection of race and sex" by Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw. The article is fairly dry (it’s about legal questions and court cases!), but incredibly clear, concise, and useful for framing how we in WGS need to think about identity and discrimination. The term/concept has become a part of even mainstream feminist discourse recently. As you read, keep in mind:
Intersectionality is a framework for thinking about how power (in terms of legal discrimination, but also the power to represent, politically) operates along multiple axes of identity
Race, gender, but also sexuality, class, immigration status, national origin, religion, etc., etc.
Intersectionality can help us:
Understand the complexities of oppression
Unpack layers of privilege and examine how privilege operates
Home in on how certain people and populations are silenced and excluded due to being “multiply burdened”
Productively critique political and cultural movements that don’t account for the complex ways power and identities converge, intersect, and interact
Once you’ve finished reading, consider a critique of intersectionality. This (ultimately conservative) position levies that Crenshaw’s concept promotes the idea of an “Oppression Olympics.” This is “a characterization of marginalization as a competition to determine the relative weight of the overall oppression of individuals or groups, often by comparing race, gender, socioeconomic status or disabilities, in order to determine who is the worst off, and the most oppressed. The characterization often arises within debates about the ideological values of identity politics, intersectionality, and social privilege"
