The theory that I chose is Gestalt therapy. The theorists associated with the therapeutic
approach are Fritz Perls, Laura Perls, and Paul Goodman (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2016). Fritz and
Laura were husband and wife (Nevis, 2014). The founders of Gestalt therapy are not the ones
who had coined the term “Gestalt” or originated Gestalt psychology. The name was originated
by Graf Christian von Ehrenfels (Nevis, 2014). The primary founder of the therapy approach,
Fritz, used the discoveries made in the field of Gestalt psychology to develop Gestalt therapy
(Nevis, 2014). Laura and Goodman contributed to Fritz’s work. The theorists also included the
principles of Existentialism philosophy into their therapeutic approach.
How Gestalt Therapy Conceptualizes Psychopathology
Gestalt theory’s approach to psychopathology differs from the approach taken by other
psychological and therapeutic methods. According to the theory, humans fall in a continuum
between healthy and pathological (Nevis, 2014). Therapists refrain from labeling their patients
with one disorder or another. Their focus is to understand the patients’ suffering from a relational
theoretical and experiential viewpoint and help patients recover from the suffering (Nevis, 2014).
The theory holds that psychopathological issues arise from a wide relational field (Nevis, 2014).
The interaction between an individual and their environment causes mental problems. The
theory’s focus on clients’ experience of existence is aimed at identifying experiences that could
have resulted in pathology and help the clients adjust properly. The treatment also helps correct
