1. An unknown compound is found to consist of 24.3% carbon 4.1% hydrogen and 71.6% chlorine. If the molar mass is 98.8g/mol what is the molecular formula of the compound?

2.A compound is and found to consist of 49.0% carbon 2.7% hydrogen and 48.2% chlorine. If the molar mass is 150g/mol what is the molecular formula of the compound?

1.

    1. C24.3H4.1Cl71.6

    2. C(24.3 ÷ 12.01)H(4.1 ÷ 1.01)Cl(71.6 ÷ 35.45)

    3. C2.02H4.06Cl2.02

    4. C(2.02 ÷ 2.02)H(4.06 ÷ 2.02)Cl(2.02 ÷ 2.02)

    5. CH2Cl

    6. MM CH2Cl = 12.01 + (2 x 1.01) + 35.45 = 49.48 g/mol

    7. 98.8 g/mol ÷ 49.48 g/mol ≈ 2

    8. (CH2Cl) x 2 = C2H4Cl2

2.
    1. C49.0H2.7Cl48.2

    2. C(49.0 ÷ 12.01)H(2.7 ÷ 1.01)Cl(48.2 ÷ 35.45)

    3. C4.08H2.67Cl1.36

    4. C(4.08 ÷ 1.36)H(2.67 ÷ 1.36)Cl(1.36 ÷ 1.36)

    5. C3H2Cl

    6. MM C3H2Cl = (3 x 12.01) + (2 x 1.01) + 35.45 = 73.5 g/mol

    7. 150 g/mol ÷ 73.5 g/mol ≈ 2

    8. (C3H2Cl) x 2 = C6H4Cl2
