·  Two part problem—find the empirical formula first, then the molecular formula from that.

a.  C24.3H4.1Cl71.6

a.  C(24.3 ÷ 12.01)H(4.1 ÷ 1.01)Cl(71.6 ÷ 35.45)

b.  C2.02H4.06Cl2.02

c.  C(2.02 ÷ 2.02)H(4.06 ÷ 2.02)Cl(2.02 ÷ 2.02)

a.  CH2Cl

b.  MM CH2Cl = 12.01 + (2 x 1.01) + 35.45 = 49.48 g/mol

c.  98.8 g/mol ÷ 49.48 g/mol ≈ 2

d.  (CH2Cl) x 2 = C2H4Cl2

anser = C2H4Cl2
