sorting all observations in ascending order,

calculate the value of L=(k/100)*N where N is the number of observations. on k is tha required percentile.

L=(85/100)*40

L=34, since L is a whole number, then P85 is the value midway between the L-value and the next one.

the values are 85, 89

P85=(85+89)/2

=174/2

=87
