Wright Mills, is defined as the awareness of the relationship between who we are as individuals and the social forces that shape our lives. One of the major goals of this course is for each student to develop a sociological imagination. Use of the sociological imagination requires the individual to develop the ability to see and understand the patterns that influence individual and group life and to recognize how aspects of our social selves (our social location) influence our identity, experiences, interactions, opportunities and outcomes. One of the ways to understand how people experience their society and why people behave and think the way they do is to look at their social location. Social location, discussed in Chapter 1, includes a person's social and physical traits that are deemed to be important by our society. Some of the traits of our social location in the U.S. include: race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, social class, nationality, geographic location, religion, disabilities and level of education. The social location of an individual has a profound influence on their experiences, interactions, opportunities and outcomes. For instance, the example of the disproportionate impact of Coronavirus illness and death on member of the African American and Latinx communities has demonstrated the consequences of social class inequalities, racial-ethnic discrimination and healthcare disparities that exist in the U.S.For this assignment, I would like you to reflect on your own social location and the ways in which it influences your experiences and outcomes, as well as examining the impact of social location in conjunction with a current issue. In order to do this, please complete the following (in 3 paragraphs):Generally discuss your social location, reviewing some of the aspects of your social location you see as significant to your experiences and opportunities (please only discuss that which you are comfortable revealing to other members of our class).
