Why are the properties of sodium (Na), element #11 in group 1, more like those of lithium (Li), element #3 in group 1 than they are like those of its neighboring element on the Periodic Table magnesium (Mg), which is element #12 group 2?

because they both belong to the same group in the periodic table and that is group 1A and the elements of same group have similar properties. they are alkali metals, have 1 electron in the valence orbit, electropositive with valency +1, form strong bases e.t.c. as far as Mg is concern, it belongs to the group 2A, it has 2 electrons in the valence orbit gets +2 charge when reacted, forms weak base.
