Three resistors (3 ohm, 6 ohm, 9 ohm) are connected in parallel to a 12 V battery. An ammeter reads the current through the 3-ohm resistor and a voltmeter measures the potential drop across the battery.

What is the equivalent resistance of the circuit?

What is the total current through the circuit?

What is the current through each resistor?

What is the voltage drop across each resistor?

How much energy is consumed in each resistor during a 5 min period?

Req=(1/3)+(1/6)+(1/9)

Req=11/18

Req=1.63 ohm                             (where Req is equivalent resistance)

I=12/1.63

I=7.36A                                          (I is Current through circuit)

I=12/3=4A                                       (Current through 3 ohm resistor)

I=12/6=2A                                        (Current through 6 ohm resistor)

I=12/9=1.33A                                    (Current through 9 ohm resistor)

V=R*I

V=3*4=12V                                       (Voltage drop across 3 ohm resistor)

V=6*2=12V                                        (Voltage drop across 6 ohm resistor)

V=9*1.33=11.97V                               (Voltage drop across 9 ohm resistor)

Power=(Energy consumed by the load) / (Time)...........Eq A

Power=VI=12*7.36=88.32watt...................Eq B

From Eq. A and B

Energy=power*time=88.32*(5*60sec)

Energy=26496Joule
