The “Fences” Review
The movie titled “Fence” with a topic ideal of “What Troy Fence?” is a multi-layered
saga that happens chiefly in a black neighborhood in the late 1950s Pittsburgh. A major piece in
the writing of Wilson is that the play tackles race and family with unusual insight and beauty.
Denzel Washington, the winner of Tony in a Broadway revival in 2010, was the director of the
screen version (Pattillo, 11). Furthermore, he repeats the role of Troy Maxson who was a former
star in baseball who currently toils as a collector of garbage. Viola Davis, who was also a winner
of Tony, returns to be Maxson’s wife Carol. Intimately familiar with what is filmed in the movie,
the two actors; Washington and August, give commanding acts, exploiting each nuance of the
characters. The two are not afraid of exposing themselves, turn against their personas in the
screen, and defy the audience’s expectations. Davis does not flinch when she was involved in a
heartbreaking monologue, where the unforgiving camera focused tightly to her face. Moreover,
Washington turns to be more magnetic, which sinks deeper his character into tragedy.
Being a star, a director, and producer, Denzel Washington brought his project of passion
on the screen with peculiarity, and his passion has been rewarded with four nominations of
Academy Awards such as adapted screenplay, actress, actor, and picture. “Fences” is a prolix,
fervent, stately although beautifully performed drama, it is lovingly photographed in a rich sunlit
hue honeycomb. The film is an adaptation of the winning stage play in 1983 by August Wilson
Pulitzer, which has been for a long time in the making, with the screenplay being accomplished
