Brothers Bob and Tom Katz buy a tent that has a center pole 6.25 feet high. If the sides of the tent are supposed to make a 50° angle with the ground, how wide is the tent?

the base angles are 50 and 50 degrees. The angle made by ou the pole is 180-(50+50)=180-100=80

for one side of the tent, the angles will be 50, 90 and 40.

using the sine rule; x/sinX=y/sinY, we have

6.25/sin50=x/sin90, but sin90=1

x=(6.25/sin50)

x= 8.1588 feet, note that x is the length of one side of the tent

but both sides of the tent from the centre pole are equal, therefore,

the legth of the tent is x+x

8.1588+8.1588=16.3176 feet

answer is 16.3176 feet
