Description
The length of a rectangular piece pf cloth is 8 cm more than the width. The area is 50 sq. cm. Find the length and the width.
I need to answer this by using quadratic applications. Explain it as simple as you can.
Explanation & Answer
let the width of the cloth be x cm, then the length will be (x+8)cm
now length*width=50
x(x+8)=50
x^2+8x=50
x^2+8x-50=0; ax^2+bx+c
using the quadratic formula; x={-b+/- sqrt(b^2-4(a)(c))}/2a
x={-8+/- sqrt(8^2-4(-50))}/2
x=-4+/- 8.124
x=-12.124 or x=4.124
but x cannot be negative, therefore x= 4.124
length=(4.124+8)= 12.124 cm
width= 4.124 cm
