A mixture of xenon and nitrogen gases, at a total pressure of 790 mm Hg, contains 16.7 grams of xenon and 4.87 grams of nitrogen. What is the partial pressure of each gas in the mixture?

Moles of xenon=16.7/131=0.1275 mol

Mass of Nitrogen=4.87g

Moles of nitrogen=4.87/28=0.1739 mol

Mole fraction of Xe=0.1275/(0.1275+0.1739)

Mole fraction of N2=0.1739/(0.1275+0.1739)

  =0.577

Now,

PXe=Ptotal*xxe=790*0.423=334.17 mmHg

PN2=Ptotal*xN2=790*0.577=455.83 mmHg
