Remember that this is just the integration of infinitesimal strips of width dx, each located at x. Each such strip has a length equal to y1-y2. In this case, y1 = 4cosx, and y2 = 3sinx: 

int[x = 0:0.5pi] (4cos(x) - 3sin(x)) = eval[x = 0:0.5pi] (4sin(x) + 3cos(x)) = [(4*1 + 3*0) - (4*0 + 3*1) ] = 4-3 = 1
