A cyclist travels up hill at an average speed of 8 mph then cycles back down 12 mph. If the trip takes 2.5 hours, what is the total distance the cyclist travels?

Let the distance traveled one side is x miles.

speed =distance/time   hence Time = Distance/speed

time required to travel up hill  = x/8

time required to travel down hill  = x/12

since total travel time is 2.5 hrs hence   x/8 + x/12 =2.5

20x = 240

or x = 240/20 = 12 miles (one side travel)

therefore total distance traveled = 12 * 2 = 24 miles  (Answer)
