Short Story Analysis: A Rose for Emily
A Rose for Emily is a short story by William Faulkner, whose general tone is
suspense, gloom, violence and terror. The main character of the story is a mysterious figure,
Miss Emily.
Question 1
Though there is no actual appearance of roses in the story, there is the appearance of
rose a color which is used to describe Emily. The title signifies that not everything is as it
seems in the story because we as the readers are only viewing it in the rose-colored lens. With
all the things that Emily had endured in her life, like her father’s death and the dissertation by
her sweetheart, she had no option but to isolate herself from the townspeople. Lack of real
interactions with the townsmen leaves them only to make speculations about her life. The
shift to modern society makes her seem like a past monument. It is at the end of the story
when Emily passes away when the townsmen find out about her darkest secret; the murder of
her sweetheart Homer Barron. With her life being the rose-coloured lens, the real Emily and
the reality of her actions are seen at the end of the story. The title, therefore, represents a
rose-tinted window that every person can see through, which shatters at the end to reveal the
reality of Emily’s window.
Question 2
The story is told from the point of view (POV) of the first person, though not a typical
first person. There is no single named narrator, but rather the term “our town” is. It appears as
if the town is telling the story, or a single person shares multiple perspectives based on
rumors. Collective consciousness is in most cases a characteristic of small towns, and the
collective consciousness narrates this short story. The towns collective consciousness is
demonstrated by the repeated utilization of the pronoun “we.” This type of narration/ POV is

essential to the story because it creates a tone of suspense. The narration ensures that the
reader is unable to get the entire picture of the story, and therefore seems like a juicy rumor;
on that the reader knows will end have an exciting end, but is not quite sure how. from
reality.
Question 3
Emily Grierson is portrayed as a defiant character, and throughout the story, she does
not seem to compromise her beliefs. This character is especially seen whe...
