x+1/x-4=0

solve multiply by x each term and both side of equation

x^2+1-4x=0

use quadratic formula to get roots

x=-b+/-sqrt{(a^2-4ac)/2a}

where b=-4 a=1 and c=1 sqrt=square root

so x=4+/-sqrt{(1-4*1*1)/2*1}

x=4+/-sqrt(-1.5)

since -1.5 has no real roots we factor it as sqrt(1.5)(-1)

where sqrt of -1 is j

so x=4+1.22j or 4-1.22j
