Refugee Crisis
The refugee crises have increasingly become problematic social issues in the modern
global society. Refugee crisis refers to the movement of large groups of people from their homes
to new destinations due to internal displacements, immigration issues or fleeing from war. In the
current times, there are more people on the move than previous periods. Worryingly, half of the
world’s refugees are children. Many of the people seeking refugee assistance are often from
developing countries, with most of them moving to nearby developed countries and others
seeking safety from conflicts in their own countries. Some of the recent refugee crisis issues
occurred in 2015 when over a million people crossed to Europe fleeing conflicts in Syria,
Afghanistan and other war-stricken zones. While some of the refugees safely make it to their
destinations, some people end up dying due to the long journeys they have to endure (Martin,
2016). The number of casualties from refugee journeys has been on the increase in recent times
with worrying numbers of immigrants who die at sea trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe
from Africa. In 2016 for instance, over 5000 people lost their lives trying to pass into Europe.
Without a doubt, there has been a rapid increase in refugee crisis in recent times, with over 20
people being displaced every minute across the world. Similarly, the refugee journeys have
become more desperate, and the number of causalities has been on the rise, prompting the need
for solutions towards this global societal problem.
Background on the Global Refugee Crisis
In 2015, there were reported over 65 million refugees around the world. This was the
highest ever recorded refuge population ever, and among the sixty-five million refugees, half of
them were children. The number of refugees in the current times is one of the highest since the

Second World War. Many of the refugees in the present times come from different conflict zones
around the world. For instance, the Syrian conflict, which started in 2011, contributed to a large
number of people crossing into Europe (Martin, 2016). Other significant populations of refugees
come from conflict zones such as Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq and the democratic republic of
Congo. Other areas also contain internally displaced peoples, i.e., Syria, Somalia, Chad, and
Ethiopia among other countries.
Refugee Social problems
The crisis has become a social issue due to the effects it has on the victims as well as the
locations that the refugees relocate. Often, refugees move to countries they consider safe havens.
However, in most cases, they find themselves in areas where the locals are themselves
