The structural functionalist and the conflict perspectives are two well-known approaches
when it comes to sociological analysis. They are perspectives that can highly be applied on
different aspects as the means to aid us to understand the society, for example, culture and
socialization, deviance as well as social control and so forth. The following paragraphs revolve
around comparing and contrasting these two perspectives of the family.
Functionalist and Conflict Perspectives
The structural functionalist perspective refers to society as a system made up of
interconnected parts functioning together with the sole intention of creating a harmonious, stable
society. This is to say that each system institution, for instance, church, economics, family,
education, and others add to the equilibrium of the whole system. It is proper to note that there
may be dysfunction within this functionalist social system. A dysfunctional system, for example,
crime may be termed as functional in the sense that it heightens awareness of the shared values
as well as shared bonds within society (Kenkel 1966). It is also worth noting that functions as far
as this perspective is concerned may be of two types; manifest and latent. When talking about
