1. For the first essay, please write about any readings or films we cover between Sept 17 and Nov 14. You could also provide a comparison of the readings/films.
2. Feel free to use the discussion outline to guide your writing (You are not required to do so. The most important thing is to make sure that you present good arguments). If you choose to use the discussion outline, please don't answer all of the questions in your essay. Your essay should defend your thesis and have a coherent structure.
3. Please upload your essay to this folder by the due date.
4. You are encouraged to visit the writing center or have a native speaker check your essay.
5. Please keep in mind that you need write 4 double-space pages.

"Almost a Love story" by Kexin Chen
The film "Almost a Love story" by Kexin Chen is set up in the 1990s and it reflects the
social issues at the time in the region, with regards to the immigration trend in that period. That
period in the 1990s was referred to as the Golden decade, where there was rampant immigration
as people sought for better lives in America. Aside from love and romance, one of the other
major themes of this film is immigration.
The film portrays an entanglement of the diaspora experience as it connects the
experiences between Hong Kong, Mainland China and America. This connection was mostly
done by the choice in setting and music by the Taiwan pop singer, Teresa Teng. The specific use
of her music in the film is because of her popularity both within China and within the overseas
Chinese community.
It portrays the issues that led to the immigration trend at the time, that included the need
for prosperity. It also reflects the issues of identity seen in the main characters of the film, that
are a reality in the society as a result of immigration.
The film is set up at a time that Hong Kong was becoming an economic power house in
