Revision of the Second Amendment to Prevent Human Tragedies
The long-standing debate on gun control has always been shifting to the general
argument on if letting citizens own private guns increase their safety or not. In most cases, the
majority of the people equate gun control to the restriction of gun ownership (McClurg et al.,
2002). The decisions made by the Supreme Court over the past years to overturn the regulation
that bans the possession of firearms in Chicago and Columbia Districts shows the evolution of
the current gun control policies. In the U.S, the court has prohibited the government from
disarming patriotic citizens that are over 21 years. Currently, the focus of gun control is on
different objectives. The first aim is defining the conditions that could result in the government
to prohibit an individual from possessing a gun. The second aspect is the implementation of
regulations that protect the right of people to possess firearms. The third is restricting of people
that own concealed firearms from carrying them from their homes. Lastly, regulating and
designing guns for the enhancement of both public and individual safety. Thus, the stud y will
focus on the discussion of the research evidence on how the advancement in the gun policies
would enhance the safety of the citizens in the United States.
In the U.S, various federal and state statutes contain the gun laws. Such legislation is
responsible for the regulation of manufacturing, trading, transferring, possessing, and destroying
ammunition and firearms and its accessories. Both the state and federal agencies play a vital role
in the enforcement of these laws. Also, some local governments have put in place policies that
regulate firearms. The Second Amendment protects the citizens’ right of keeping and bearing
arms. Even though there has been increased debate on the nature of the gun possession right, the
rulings of the federal courts failed to provide a clear definition of the right until 2008 and 2010
on District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. City of Chicago cases respectively.
