Description
What are the significant political differences (between north & south) or between the political parties that make compromise possible in the 1850 Omnibus Bill aka the great compromise but impossible in 1860?
Explanation & Answer
Hello,
Southern republicanism was tightly grounded in the master-slave relationship including the defense of liberty, independence, and rejectio of the majority. On the other hand, Norther republicanism focused on free soil and personal honor (which played a significant role in creating southern republicanism). Southerners believed that the government refused to give slaveholders their equity due to Wilmot and Taylor plan to admit California as a free state.
