There were many events that lead up to the annexation of Texas. Chief among them was the defeat of the Mexican army by the forces fighting for an independent Texas Texas represented the need for more land for westward expansion. The entrance of Texas into the union was seen to upset the balance between free and slave states. Polk won the Democratic nomination and the presidency as the only candidate that favored annexation of Texas.
