Let the time taken by Jake be 't' hours

So the time taken by Elwood = t+3 hours

85t + 90 (t+3) = 970

85t+90t+270 = 970

175t = 970-270

175t = 700

 t= 700/175

  = 4

so  time taken by Elwood = 4+3 = 7hours
