A sample of O2 gas is observed to effuse through a pourous barrier in 2.30minutes. Under the same conditions, the same number of moles of an unknown gas requires 3.34 minutes to effuse through the same barrier. The molar mass of the unknown gas is  g/mol.

Ta  is time taken by oxygen.

so  2.30/3.34 = sqrt (  Mb/32)

0.4742 = mb/32

mb = 0.4742 x 32

mb = 15.17 g/mol

According to grams law, Time gas A over Time gas B = Sq. root molec wt. A over sq. root molec wt. B

Time of gas A = 2.30

Time of gas B = 3.34

so 2.30/3.34 = sqrt 32/ sqrt molar mass B

0.68862 =  5.65685/ sqrt B

0.68862 x sqrt B = 5.65685

sqrt B = 5.65685/0.68862

sqrt B = 8.21476

B =  67.48 grams per mole
