A novice golfer on the green takes three strokes to sink the ball. The successive dis- placements are 6.8 m to the north, 5.8 m northeast, and 7 m 11◦ west of south. Start- ing at the same initial point, an expert (lucky) golfer could make the hole in a single displace- ment. What is the magnitude of this single dis- placement? Answer in units of m.

The 3 displacements along the X Y axes  are:

DX1=0,  DY1=6.8

DX2=5.8 cos(135)= - 4.1  DY2=5.8 sin(135)=4.1

DX3=7 cos(270+11)= 1.33, DY3=7 sin(270+11) = - 6.87

Summing up:

DX = 0-4.1+1.33=-2.77   DY= 6.8+4.1-6.87=4.03

The length of a single shot:

L=sqrt(DX^2+DY^2)=4.89

The angle with respect to the X axis: tan^(-1)(4.03/-2.77) = -55.5 degrees or 304.5 degrees or 55.5 south of west or 34.5 east of south (all these definitions are the same).
