A novice golfer on the green takes three strokes to sink the ball. The successive dis-placements are 3.5 m to the north, 4.7 m northeast, and 3 m 44◦ west of south. Start-ing at the same initial point, an expert (lucky) golfer could make the hole in a single displace-ment.
What is the magnitude of this single dis-placement?

Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

take north as positive y axis and east positive of x axis,

r1 = 3.5 j

r2 = 4.7*sqrt(2)/2 (i +j) = 3.323 i +3.323j

r3 = 3*(-cos44◦-sin44◦) =  -2.158i-2.084j

r = r1+r2+r3 = 1.165 i +4.739j

|r| = sqrt(1.165^2+4.739^2) =  4.88 m

Please let me know if you need any clarification. I'm always happy to answer your questions.
