Now to solve, we multiply everything by x+1 to eliminate the denominators

1 + 4(x+1) = 17

1 + 4x + 4 = 17

4x = 12

x = 3

The restriction is x not equal to -1

There is only one solution.  If this were a quadratic equation then there would be 2 solutions.
