I know that it is some how possible to  have a solution to a system of inequalities when the lines corresponding to the inequalities are independent and parallel. I just don't understand exactly how. Can someone explain how this is possible?

Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

It is possible if two intervals which are the solutions of two inequalities overlap and have the one same interval as a solution.

Please let me know if you need any clarification. I'm always happy to answer your questions.
