There are many metaphors (poetic comparisons) used by the author, Wang Ping. For example, the author says, "time bomb" for books her daughter read. He says, "book war" for reading and telling stories to his sibling, friends, and neighbors. The last sentence of the story has a good metaphor; using starry eyes as a reflection of winning the war.
This story is an excellent narration of how 1960's China banned books and schools and the impact it caused on children. Many people fought against the banning and found ways to read free publications on their own. The author is happy that he played a successful part of his own in this "Book War".
