On the midterm, you will choose between Dating-ish and Misery; on the final exam, Land of Shadows and All Systems Red. You may not write your final essay on either of the novels you choose for the midterm and the final exam. As such, over the course of the semester, you will write three essays on three different novels. Essays will be graded based on the following criteria: thesis and argument; structure; supporting evidence and analysis; writing. 1. Critics often dismiss genre fiction as a distraction from the drudgery of everyday life. Others believe that genre fiction has just as much potential as high literature to convey sophisticated themes. Pick one of the books studied in this course and discuss whether you feel the book is escapist, sophisticated, or both. 2. Genre fiction often features protagonists who provide fantasies that temporarily relieve readers’ anxieties. Choose one novel and explore how it provides readers with relief. 3. Discuss how a particular metaphor or symbol in one of the five novels studied this semester might partially explain the book’s appeal. (For example, you might want to explore how a certain metaphor enables the reader to explore a taboo topic.) 4. Gender is a concern in many of our conversations about the texts that we’ve read. Discuss how one of the novels upholds OR challenges gender stereotypes. 5. Race and ethnicity are also a concern in many of our conversations about the texts that we’ve read. Discuss how one of the novels upholds OR challenges racial and ethnic stereotypes. Note: You may combine #4 and #5 into one essay. 6. Critics often accuse genre fiction of having flat characters. Discuss whether a novel’s characters are flat or round AND examine what effect their flatness or roundness has on the reader and/or the larger novel. 7. Compare Misery to its film adaptation (1990, dir. Reiner). Do not discuss whether the film is more or less entertaining than the novel; instead, compare their themes. What are the similarities and/or differences between their themes? What literary and cinematic techniques work to convey these themes? 8. Pick your own topic. It must be approved by the instructor.

Round and Flat Characters
Over time, critics have always accused the genre fiction of employing only flat characters
in their writing. However, this is not necessarily the case since there are notable changes in
recent writings such that novelists are attempting to employ round characters either as
protagonists or minor characters. In literature, a flat character is viewed as a one-dimensional or
lacks complexity. They could be described effectively with just a single word such as a bully or
just a single sentence like a naïve young man. In this case, flat characters do not change at all
from their character or rather break away from the formula that describes them. Flat characters
have been used in the fiction genre since the late 1920s and were first focused by E.M. Forster in
the book “The Aspect of the Novel”.
He focused on the fact that flat characters are characterized by a unique quality that they
do not deviate from and lack the element of surprise to the readers. It is this factor that led to
various critics raising concerns on the fact that genre fiction only centers on flat characters. The
critics aimed at challenging the writers to adopt round characters in their literary works.
Genre fiction uses flat characters since flat characters are always essential to move the
story only that they tend to be mostly overused. Having a lot of information concerning minor
characters could deviate the protagonist’s attention as well as the basic conflicts and themes of

the story. Critics argue that there exist other specific ways to archive this without necessarily
focusing on flat characters. They tend to advocate for use of round characters in writing since
round characters often have complex personalities that are characterized by deep passions and
feelings. They are often described fully by the writer both mentally ...
