Reply to the following Discussion Question. Minimum 120 wordsThe
myth that appealed to me the most was the story of King Arthur. The
story tells of a young boy, of only 15, was able to become the King of
all Britain. Arthur did this by being the only one who could pull the
sword from the marble stone. Though, Arthur had to prove himself to the
elite of Britain to become a knight who possessed the best qualities of
strength, courage and skill but blinded by only seeing the good in
others. He became the ruler of the Roman Empire, carried the great sword
Excalibur, fought to defend his thrown against those he believed to be a
friend and against his illegitimate son who before dying, wounds Arthur
that leads to his own death (Rosenberg, 2006). I
think that the story of King Arthur is timeless because of all the
factors that are found in it; magic, knighthood, adventure, betrayal,
love affairs. There are just so many factors that are found that it can
appeal to a number of people with all types of interests. Most little
boys love to hear stories about King Arthur and his Knights of the Round
Table, or Excalibur the most powerful sword. The idea of the Lady of
the Lake can appeal to girls to show the kind of strength and importance
that a woman can have. The appeal of the story of King Arthur has been
an influence in multiple forms of literature, movies, television,
comics, music and more. Reference: Rosenberg, D. (2006). World mythology: An anthology of great myths and epics (3rd ed.). Chicago, IL: McGraw Hill.

Reference only (Original Question, DO NOT REPLY -- SEE BELOW):Which of these myths appeals to you most? Provide a brief synopsis of the myth, and explain why. What do you think accounts for its timeless appeal? Which contemporary stories share similar themes or mythological origins? Please reply to the following (120 words):Of all the myths the myth that appealed to me the most was the one of Beowulf. In brief the story tells about the great hall which was commanded to be built by Hrothgar the King and explains about the Grendel the evil one which would hide in the marshlands. And due to the great hall and celebrations, Grendel would get upset so he kills the guards. Beowulf becomes aware of the what’s going on and offers to help. Eventually they confront each other, Beowulf rips Grendel’s arm and leaves wounded. When Grendel’s mother hears of what happened she fights Beowulf but is not hurt by her confrontation. After that he becomes king. As time passes Grendel’s mother steals a golden cup from the Dragon. The dragon becomes very upset begins to burn everything. Beowulf and his men fight the dragon and Beowulf dies. A contemporary movie is actually Beowulf the movie made in 2007. I personally haven't seen the movie but I liked reading this story had almost a Lord of the Rings kind of feeling to it both being Anglo-Saxon-esque.ReferencesRosenberg, D. (2006). My father is a hero to because of his courage to join the military after high school disobeying his parents’ wishes to go to college. His reasoning in going to the military was to defend his country. Not a lot of people are brave enough to join the military. After his completion with the military he was determined to go back to his hometown and apply to be a police officer. The town he grew up in lacked diversity in the police department and he wanted to be the one of the first to add to it. This was a must for him because he wanted to help his community.I would compare my father with the mythical hero Odin from Norse. Odin was a hero that defeated the giant and his uncontrollable gang stars according to Leonard and McClure (2004). In our hometown there has been a wild spread of gang members that has been making trouble in our community throughout the years. Our town was once a safe place for people to live prior to this occurrence. My dad, along with other police officers is a part of the city’s gang unit to put a stop to gang violence. I would say that both Odin and my dad have brave characteristics because of their ways to defeat unruly people. I believe that the main comparison between a contemporary and mythical hero is their heroic activity and characteristics.ReferenceLeonard, S., & McClure, M. (2004).
