Introduction
Learning and cognition are two related concepts in that; cognition is the process that
leads to a response or a learned behavior. Due to this relationship, therefore, learning takes place
through several forms of cognitive behavior. While the two concepts might appear similar, they
are defined differently in that, learning is the process through which knowledge is gained while
cognition, on the other hand, is the process or the act of knowing. In spite of the aforementioned
relationship, learning and cognition are both performance-based. The theoretical framework in
learning is that; an individual is born with the neurological ability to acquire knowledge. This
means that; whether through trial and error or through structured environments such as work or
schools, a cognitive process must take place in order to produce knowledge. In an individual, the
same processes become traits and can often lead to additional learning. The levels of cognition
vary depending on the species and therefore human beings have a higher level than any other
animal.
Among the two concepts, motivation is a major factor. The higher the stimuli within
one’s environment, the higher the emphasis is towards learning a new behavior. Positive as well
as negative feedback received through this process helps towards governing which of the
processes are maintained as well as those that are discarded.
Due to the broad nature of learning and cognition, therefore, this paper will be based on
the subject’s peer-reviewed literature in support of the analysis of the article on Social learning
theory, Behaviorism, operant condition as well as classical conditioning.

Operant Conditioning
B.F. Skinner’s theory focuses on the idea that learning is the function of a change in overt
behavior. Change among individuals is as a result of their response to events (stimuli) that takes
place within the environment. The individual’s response to stimuli produces a consequence such
as solving a math problem, hitting a ball or providing a word definition. Reinforcing of given
stimuli-response conditions the individual to respond. The distinctive characteristic of operant
conditioning that is relative to the other behaviorism forms is that; organisms are capable of
