A strong or a weak electrolyte determination is based on the level of dissociation in a solution. A strong
electrolyte completely dissociates while a weak electrolyte partially dissociates. Whether or not a
substance dissolves in an aqueous solution is not a determining factor in its strength. An electrolyte may
have low solubility in water but be a strong electrolyte since the small amount that does dissolve
completely dissociates. In other words, there is a difference between dissolution and dissociation.
