Suppose plane that travel to Los Angeles, California is A and that of New York City is B.

You get miles/hour by dividing the miles by the hours.
2464/2 = 1232 mi/hr

That's the sum of their speeds, since speeds are added when going in opposite directions.
----
B + A = 1232
B - A = 54

Total speed  = 1286

Average speed = 1286/2 = 643mph

2B = 1286

B = 643 mph

and A = 1232 - 643 = 589 mph

Avg speed = 2x643x589 / (643+589)

 = 615 mph approximately
