Two passengers leave the airport at Kansas City, Missouri. One flies to Los Angeles, California, in 2 hr and the other flies in the opposite direction to New York City in 2 hr. With prevailing westerly winds, the speed of the plane to New York City is 54 mph faster than the speed of the plane to Los Angeles. If the total distance traveled by both planes is

2,464 mi,

Dear, your question is under process and shall be available to you in next few minutes.

Suppose plane that travel to Los Angeles, California is A and that of New York City is B.

You get miles/hour by dividing the miles by the hours.
2464/2 = 1232 mi/hr

That's the sum of their speeds, since speeds are added when going in opposite directions.
----
B + A = 1232
B - A = 54

Total speed  = 1286

Average speed = 1286/2 = 643mph

Jun 4th, 2015

2B = 1286

B = 643 mph

and A = 1232 - 643 = 589 mph

Avg speed = 2x643x589 / (643+589)

= 615 mph approximately
