Description

This lab report must be written in APA format. If you are not familiar with APA format here is a link, http://www.apastyle.org/learn/faqs/cite-website-material.aspx (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. It must include complete sentences, with correct spelling and punctuation. The text should be double spaced, except in Tables where single spacing is required. It should have an introduction, materials/methods, results, discussion, acknowledgments, and references sections – see below for details.

In the introduction, the expectation of results and background of mendelian genetics should be introduced and discussed. The materials/methods are the procedures used to care and identify the flies. The results section will be split into two parts, the F1 generation results and the F2 generation results. The fly report should include the raw data from fly counts, images of the flies, observations, and Punnett squares with chi-square analysis in the results as well. When giving raw data do not place a large table taking up multiple pages showing the fly counts, give a concise raw data or points will be taken off. The discussion should include, but is not limited to, a comparison of the results obtained with the theoretical expectations made. Be sure to include a title page!

All references cited should be put into a reference section with the following general format for a book, parts of a book, research papers, or websites or websites (web sites should be numbered in the order that they were first cited and listed in numerical order at the end of the written references, including their URL and a title if available): APA format. For each lab report at least 2 references are required. For help with formatting references use the following: https://www.citefast.com/?s=APA (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..

Fly Lab Report: Preparation and Use drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) To Demonstrate
morphological features and Mendelian Crosses
Introduction
Study of genetics was hugely contributed by Mendel. Gregor Mendel explored genetics through
the study of peas where he applied his two basic laws of Segregation and Independent
Assortment (Halfhill,& Warwick,2016). The Law of Segregation stated that there exists two
alleles from which, each part of the pair separates into a distinct gamete during reproduction
of organisms. The second Law, the Law of Independent Assortment, sates that each alleles
separates independently from that of other genes (Halfhill,& Warwick,2016). He used pea plant
crosses and analysed the outcome using the punnet square which puts alleles of the parents
separately and crosses them. It was not until 1907 when a scientist, Morgan, used the
drosophila melanogaster for genetics experiment following the Mendel’s model. Also known
as fruit fly, drosophila melanogaster s found all-over the world and its use for genetic
experiments has since been on a rise. Some of the reasons given includes easy and universal
availability, higher reproduction rate under room temperature, easy to handle in terms of size
and its similarity of genes to humans (Attrill, Falls, Goodman, $ Millburn et al. 2015)
). This experiment explored observational skills to identify the sex of the fruit flies, their
phenotypic appearance of wings, eyes and colour. The experiment was also focussed on F1 and
F2 generations to help identify sex linked genes, autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive
genes. Autosomal genes that express themselves both heterozygous and homozygous
occurrence are autosomal dominant. On the other hand, autosomal recessive genes are only
expressed when they occur in a homozygous manner (Gayon , 2016). Flies need to be
anaesthetized before examined. Two available methods are use of a freezer and use of FlyNap.

In this experiment, the later method was used. Fruit flies also prefer a yeast-based diet which
was provided in the experiment.

Methods and Materials
Materials: Traps, Wand, FlyNap bottles,
Procedure:
1. Anaesthetize the flies:
With a wand and FlyNap bottle ready, the wand was gently dipped into the chemical,
and briefly because the chemical is extremely potent. With the flies in the vial, the plug
was opened and the wand fast introduced in the top and the plug was closed. When
