Introduction
The compromise of 1850 refers to five bills that were passed in September 1850. The
bills were instrumental in solving the problem of slavery. The compromise helped resolve a fouryear disagreement between free and slave states in the United States of America. The fight was
over the status of territories acquired during the Mexican-American war. The issue of slavery
was a bone of contention in the Congress. It tore the Congress into two as antislavery advocates
felt they should not interfere with South America’s way of life. This means that they did not
want to interfere with the slavery which was highly held by white settlers. Advocates who did
not support slavery, popularly referred to as abolitionists, argued that preventing the spread of
slavery was a significant step towards having slavery being abolished. As a free state instead.

Several factors led to the compromise of 1850. One of the main points that stand is that
both free and slave state members in the Congress in 1850 were eager to avert war and hence
welcomed the compromise in pursuit of an agreement that would maintain calm (Rhodes, 1895).
