I. Introduction
A. (Attention Getter) Good Afternoon residents of New Jersey. My name is David
Raymond; I am the Director of Emergency Management for the beautiful State of
New Jersey. As you all know roughly about one week ago hurricane sandy came
rushing through our state and devastated a good chuck of beautiful coastlines.
B. (Establish Credibility/Expertise) It is my job and personal responsibility to ensure
the safety of all of our New Jersey residents during times of crisis such as this.
C. (Connect to Audience/ 1. Common Ground) As a native of New Jersey myself I
can share the pain and suffering that you are all experiencing right now and I
would like to send all of my condolences from my family to yours.
D. With that said today I am going to discuss the severity of hurricane sandy and
how as a state and community we are going to fix this situation.
II. So let me start with some of the effects of the hurricane.
A. (1. Identify Crisis Parameters) According to Drye of National Geographic’s
(Drye, 2012) on October 28th around eight o’clock in the evening, after stewing in
the middle of the Atlantic ocean for several days hurricane sandy finally reached
the coast of new jersey. Rushing in approximately with winds at 80 mph, nocking
down trees, ripping power lines of their posts leaving them lay across roads.
B. In addition, the storm took iconic seaside heights roller coaster from land into
ocean.
C. In addition, according to Smith from CNN news (Smith, 2012) Sandy has already
claimed the life of 11 individuals, many more not accounted for at this point.
D. In addition, left over 200 individuals injured in hospitals and local shelters
thousand displaced from their homes.
E. (3. Crisis Severity) Lastly, according to Kavoussi of the Huffington post
(Kavoussi, 2012) the damages are expected to ring a large price tag between 30
and 50 billion dollars, 20 of that billion dollars alone is going to be set aside for
infrastructure damages.
(So now that we have talked about the effects, some of the physical effects, some of the
costly effects of the hurricane, I want to talk about how as a community we are going to
get through this situation.
III. (4. Feed forward Solution) I want to start by saying that we are going to do this
together, no one can do this alone, and no one can do this over night.
A. The Red Cross has collected over 145 million dollar in donations at this point,
deployed over thousands of disaster workers, which have already set up overnight
shelters that are providing over 100,000 meals to those without homes.
(Boardman, 2012)
B. In addition, I really want to reassure you that the government officials are
working around the clock to do their best to fix this situation.
C. (5. Roll out plan) So as active members of out community you are all wondering,
“What can I do to help with this situation” and the answer to that question is very
simple.
1. What I need you to do is respect the space of all Red Cross workers,
firefighter, police, rescue team, and any other first responders out in the
fields; these people are trained professionals who have the same goal in
mind, your safety.
2. Second, please remain calm, according to the New Jersey office of
Emergency (New Jersey Office of Emergency Management, 2012), when
you remain calm you have a clear state of mind and when the state of New
Jersey is ready to call on you, you will be ready to respond.
3. Lastly. Please, stay off of the roads. Most of these roads at this point are
not passable and at this point are not expected to be passable for weeks or
maybe even months.
D. (6. Argue Plan Support) At the moment of time I feel as if this is the best course
of action. (3. Trustworthiness) I trust all of the energy of the hardworking men
and women out in the field right now. They are doing their best to hit the situation
on the head. (2.Dynamism)
IV. Conclusion
A. So I want to take this time to wrap up what I have discussed today.
B. We talked about the effects of hurricane sandy, we talked about some of the
economic damages, physical damages, and the damages that are happening right
at home. We also talked about what we are going to do to fix this situation. We
are going to stay off the roads and respect the space of the working.
C. At this time we all really need to connect to our loved ones, to our family, to our
friends, and especially to our neighbors who are in the same situation.
D. (2.Kairos) Everything will be fine; New Jersey will come together as long as we
stick together. And with that being said I would like you to enjoy the rest of your
night and as we approach these holiday seasons, please like I said stick together,
everything is going to be ok. Have a great night, stay safe, thank you. (7.Link
support to ethics)
