1. Attachment Parenting
The controversy that exists with caregivers concerning infants relates to how they should
respond in the case of crying babies. While some proponents support the ‘cry it out' method
(CIO) where the baby is ignored until he or she stops crying, others have advocated for
attachment parenting (AP). Attachment parents respond very fast to the cries of their babies and
proceed to cuddle and hug the babies to sooth them. Attachment parenting is more familiar with
new or modern parents than with traditional parents.
Attachment theorists posit that babies' display of their desire to be close to their
caregivers is a factor of evolutionary survival value. When a baby's cries are responded to often,
a warm and intimate relationship is fostered between the baby and the caregiver. Such healthy
relationships contribute to the general health of the baby in addition to their basic survival.
Babies who do not show any attachment behavior have higher chances of losing their way, being
bullied or perishing due to their reduced probability of survival.
CIO supporters establish that when a baby is abandoned to cry, they will eventually stop
crying and the duration of future bouts will also decrease as time goes by. Researchers
categorized the stages of the method from protest, despair and finally the detachment stage. The
detachment phase involved a renewed but distant interest in the surroundings after bouts of
monotonous crying or general inactivity. It is significant to note that while the CIO method
seems to be a preferable alternative to attachment parenting, the method concurrently develops
apathy traits in the children. In other words, the child stops crying because they realize the
hopelessness of expecting to receive the caregiver’s attention, and not because their discomfort
has been alleviated.

confusing world. Consistent and responsive parenting techniques serve to confirm to the infants
that they are worthy of love and other people can be looked upon to provide it. The infants grow
up to be secure individuals as a result of bei...
