Saint Leo University Sexual Behavior Discussion Reply
Abstract (scarlet)There are different standards when it comes to the topic of sexual behavior. These standards have drastically changed over the course of many years and the change has, luckily, been for the better. If one looks back into history, there was a point where sex was only used for pro-creation and no recreational purpose. The woman was believed to be evil and the only thing she was good for was reproducing to populate the earth. However, time went on and many believed sex was good for recreational use for the male gender. This was where the birth of the double standard came into action. Luckily, the world has shifted and society has recognized the need for equality within both genders. The single standard of sexual behavior has been introduced and allows for the power of sexual behavior for both men and women. Keywords: sexual standard, sex behavior, double standard, single standard Single Standard of Sexual Behavior The topic of sexual behavior has been heavily discussed since the beginning of times and the interest in this topic has continued to grow tremendously in today’s current society. What once started off as a sexual act shared between two individuals who intended on pro-creating has now spanned into a new foundshared interest in recreational admiration between two consensual sexual partners who enjoy spending this intimate time together. The road to this understanding has been a long and winding one as society did not previously believe that this was what sex was meant to be used for (Freedman, 1982, p. 198). There were, also, an abundant amount of stipulations on women during these time periods and it was thought that the female gender did not deserve to share their feelings or opinions on the matters regarding sexual attraction and behaviors. The activity of sex was known to be a primarily male controlledaction that was used for their own pleasure and to pro-create with the woman. The pro-creation factor regarding women was never a wonderful and miraculous topic of discussion as women were literally bringing life into the world. While it was understood that they were the only gender capable of doing this action, they never received any proper credit for doing this oftentimes dangerous activity of carrying a baby for nine months and giving birth during much harder times. Women were treated like scum and often just used for their bodies during these historical periods. Different Standards of Sexual Behavior The concept and understanding of sexual behaviors and the different standards that are present all stem from the previously set and influential understandment of this concept in our culture. There are varying standards that many people do relay on in terms of sexual behavior. The double standard of sexual behavior “consists of judging heterosexual men and women differently for the same sexual behavior” (Berrocal et al. 2019, p. 45). This double standard is hazardous to a woman’s mental health as it can affect her thoughts regarding her own self and body. The men are told to treat sexual contact as something they must engage in to remain healthy and that they deserve this type of interaction and justifies their need for the pleasure that comes from sexual interactions with women. Meanwhile, the woman is taught that she must protect her body and not be an easy target for sexual interactions with the male gender as they must protect their sexual wellbeing. It is obvious through observation of this double standard that this particular standard does benefit the male gender as opposed to the female gender. This double standard can be extremely harmful as it can oftentimes lead to incorrect thought processes regarding the woman’s body and the need for consent when it has not been given. The double standard can be shown to lead into multiple detrimental sexual issues such as sexual assault, sexual victimization, and even can be the reason why people victim blame (Eaton & Matamala, 2014, p. 1476). This is such a dangerous concept and it can negatively affect those who are influenced by this type of standard in today’s culture. It can really harm those who are in their teenage years are pressured by society expectations on both genders. While this double standard is usually more harmful for the girl/woman involved as it focuses on their lack of equality towards the male counterpart in terms of sexual pleasure and enjoyment, this double standard can also cause negative effects on the male gender. It can create a certain social stigma that the young teenage boy may feel like he has to live up to when it involves being peer pressured by friends and those he surrounds himself with. In contemporary American society, it is considered normal for boys to be celebrated for losing their virginity or making any type of sexual advancement towards a girl as it shows that they have game and are able to get what they want (Kreager & Staff, 2009, p. 147). If a boy’s friends are dissing them for not getting a girl to engage in sexual conduct with them, they may feel as if they are less of a man or not good enough due to the lack of validation they are receiving from their male counterparts. Both genders do not benefit from this double standard of sexual behavior in any sort of way and this is quite a toxic belief system related to sexual nature in humans. Single Standard AnalysisThe single standard of sexual behavior is extremely different from that of the double standard of sexual behavior as it allows the enjoyment of sexual pleasure from both parties without any feelings of guilt or embarassment. Men are able toenjoy the pleasures of sexual enjoyment with their partner and women are able to do the same activity without being shamed for enjoying the pleasure or turned away for such “crude” sexual behaviors that are considered un-lady like in many people’s high and ridiculous standards. The single standard of sexual behavior is quite a health standard as it allows for the growth of the two individuals engaging in intercourse as well as the emphasis on equality. There is no one feeling pressured into these sexual acts nor are they feeling as if they are not worthy enough to be undergoing this type of behavior. They both make the conscious decision to share this private and intimate moment with one another without feeling any form of humility or liability for these sexual actions. Benefits of Single Standard in Sexual Behavior There are multiple benefits to the single standard in sexual behavior. A major benefit is in regard to the promotion of equality that is present between both parties. This newfound equality allows for a beautifully blossoming relationship that can be based on shared companionship and allow for a healthy environment to grow together in. This means that the couple would not feel one-sided and both parties would get their opinions heard and their needs met. This will allow for an increase in both parties libido as they both feel cared for and this can lead to an increase in sexual pleasure and comfort. Another benefit with using and understanding the single standard in sexual context is the correct process of teching young teenagers how sex and sexual relationships should be viewed. It is not an activity that is meant for only men to enjoy and for pro-creation to occur, however, sex is meant for pro-creation and recreational use from both parties involved when it is decided upon and consent has been received. By teaching this standard to upcoming youth, there will be a decreasing amount of cases of sexual assault cases that go unreported as young girls and boys will understand the importance of not letting another person take advantage of their bodies and, if it does unfortunately happen, they will understand that they have every right to report the disgusting individual who committed this act against them.ConclusionSexual behavior is a topic that will always be widely discussed in our culture no matter what. It is important to stay well informed and to continue to push the narrative as both genders deserve equal rights, especially when it comes to the topic of sexual actions. There has been so much proactive action and increased change over the course of many centuries for the woman population and we are now living in a current era where we are seeing equality for all and acceptance no matter who you love or who you are sexually attracted to. This is a beautiful arc in history and we hope it continues to stay working in the favor of both genders. There are different standards when it comes to the topic of sexual behavior.
