ASB 300: Food and Culture Book Club Summary and Course Reflection ASSIGNMENT TEMPLATE PART 1: CHEAP MEAT DISCUSSION (20 points) Please summarize the debate in your group discussion of Cheap Meat: Flap Food Nations in the Pacific Islands. What was your original position and did your perspective change over the course of the debate? Indicate if there was broad consensus (and if so, what that consensus was) or if there were multiple factions (and what each faction was arguing). What were the primary sources of evidence that people relied upon to make their arguments? (400-600 words) PART 2: REFLECTION (21 points, 7 points each) a. What is the modern omnivore’s dilemma? Mutton flaps in the Pacific island
The change in diet occurred all over the world and instead of the bread that occupied
almost half the table, cheap meat; flaps, was introduced. The change in diet occurred ever since
Dr. Robert C. Atkins delivered the news that one could consume any amount of meat but still
undergo weight loose (Michael, 2006, pp 13). The news brought change to every diet and is the
reason why people eat a lot of mutton flaps. The issue of importing mutton flaps to other
countries especially pacific islands has brought a serious debate. I believe that that is the reason
why Pacific island has a large population of its citizens diagnosed with obesity and hypertension.
In my opinion, the issue of importing mutton flaps to Pacific Island should be treated as a public
health concern.
The consumption of mutton flaps covers approximately sixteen percent of meat
consumed (Gewertz & Errington, 2010). To deal with the issue appropriately, strict regulations
should be passed on any food imports that have more than forty percent of its energy coming
from fats. This would be done both by the importing countries' government and the governments
of the countries that receive the imports. For instance, if such rules were passed on all the
countries importing mutton flaps to Pacific Island, the amount of cheap meat imported to the
state would reduce and so would the number of citizens with obesity or hypertension.
