Final Project Based on information and experiences acquired in this class, the text, and your life, you will write a 5-7 page paper integrating and synthesizing what you have learned and how this class has affected your professional/personal development. To help with this exercise, I am recommending that you write (at least weekly) and keep a journal of your thoughts and feelings regarding psychology and this class. I believe that such a journal will help this project “write itself.” We will spend class time further discussing this project. The following questions must be answered in your paper: How has this class affected my personal development? How has this class affected my professional development? How will I change the world (make the world a better place)? How am I a leader who can effect change? What are my short and long term goals for effecting change? Course Description (from Undergraduate Catalogue): PSY 1100, General Psychology (3) A general introduction to the science of behavior, surveying the broad field of psychology and the methods of investigation. Course Purpose: The purpose of this course is to provide you with a general introduction to the broad field of psychology, including methods of investigation. Much of what you learn in this course may relate directly to your life experiences and to information learned in other courses. The course is also designed to provide the necessary background for those interested in pursuing advanced study in psychology. Specific learning objectives will be provided with each topic that is discussed in class. This course is also designed to help you develop several General Education competencies, such as general problem solving and communication skills, effective use of technology, and the ability to evaluate scientific evidence. Mission Statement: We are committed to preparing you and our diverse body of students to apply skills and knowledge from the discipline of psychology in a changing world. We provide you with a contemporary and comprehensive curriculum, grounded in psychological science, with opportunities for personalized educational experiences and the use of relevant technology. We prepare you for employment in a variety of fields as well as admission to graduate and professional programs. Course Objectives in Relation to General Education Program : Many of the objectives of this course are related to the knowledge and skill competencies of the General Education program. The primary General Education Program competency to be addressed in this class is Competency 8: Knowledge of the human experience using the standards of evidence and reasoning appropriate to history and the social/behavioral sciences. Specifically, "Students will demonstrate an ability to comprehend, evaluate, and analyze aspects of the human experience through an understanding of history and the social and behavioral sciences and the standards of evidence that create knowledge within those frameworks. Students will learn substantive content as well as the relevant evaluative process of reasoning, evidence, and argument." The secondary General Education Program competency to be addressed in this class is Competency 4: Thinking creatively and critically. Specifically, "Students will apply standards of reasoning including conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating information. Students will learn to distinguish among opinions, facts, and inferences in order to evaluate the strength of arguments and to inform their own ability to make judgments and create alternative solutions." You are expected to develop these competencies through completion of assigned readings and assignments, including a critical thinking paper assignment. Your understanding of this competency will be assessed through your performance on exams/quizzes as well as through the use of a scoring rubric (included in this syllabus) to be used in evaluating your critical thinking paper assignment.
