Discussion 1
China is a diverse society with one of the busiest economies as well as developments that
motivate people to make individual decisions in their day to day lives. The relationship created
between different individuals is highly dependent on their social status, financial abilities and
personal attributes that lands them in specific areas. Alec Ash in his work, Wish Lanterns,
explores the concept of the Chinese society amongst the young generation by closely following
six individuals still in their twenties. The author addresses their different traits in diverse aspects
of their lives hence showing the segmentation of the social setting in line with school, work and
business.
A discussion with Chipmunk about this book brings different views on the main message
that the author is trying to communicate. Chipmunk states that the diverse lives of these youths
show no connection to each other. There is, therefore, no similarity amongst them apart from
their age range as they engage in different activities which display several aspects of life (Ash,
2017). I, however, find all these individuals going through similar experiences and giving
specific implications for Chinese society. The truth is that they all possess varying traits, interests
and engagements, but it does not disconnect them from the social status of China (South China
Morning Post, 2016). They are the implication of the modern day experiences that people go
through in their efforts to achieve their dreams and survive the tough economic times in the
country.
The book takes a look at individuals from different backgrounds, with varying goals and
objectives but with a similar ambition to build a good life. Dahai a fresh engineering graduate
working at the train tunnel is from a military family, while Xiaoxiao manages to open a boutique
after completing school. Fred is taking political philosophy studies and a daughter to one of the
