Extremely low birth weight is generally considered any baby born weighing less than 3.4lbs (CHOP, 2017). This low birth weight usually can be attributed to premature births or intrauterine growth restrictions because the baby had less time to gain weight. There are long and short term affects caused by low birth weight that can be felt by family and society. The main being a financial strain that is placed on the family. These low birth weight babies tend to have to go and stay in the NICU for several days to several weeks after birth until they can reach a certain weight limit (usually 5lbs or more) before being released home. These babies are also at a higher risk for developing respiratory problems, brain bleeds and infections because they are to tiny and their bodies do have the immunities to help fight infections. A major long term consequence is developmental delays. Parents of low birth babies often experience guilt and stress that associated with care. Resources are needed to care for low birth babies that puts a strain on society to assist in the care and monitoring of these babies. While it is not known exactly why, African American mothers are twice as likely to give birth to a low weight baby than their Caucasian counterparts (March of Dimes, 2014). Another risk factor is age. Mothers less than 15 years of age or older than 35 years of age are also more at risk for having a low weight babies.

In North Carolina there is the WIC program at www.fns.usda.gov/wic and the Children's Developmental Services Agency (CDSA) at www.brennerchildrens.org/CDSA. Parents are usually directed to or directly set up with both before the baby is discharged from the hospital.
