Description

In this project you will design an all-glass coffee table. For a given geometry, find how the location of an applied force affects the internal forces and moments in each of part of the table. Select three different loading scenarios and find the internal forces and moments. Study how the length of the table affects the internal forces and moments – consider at least three different lengths. Find the center of mass of the table. Investigate at least one more aspect of the design. Please work it out with MATLAB. And do not forget code. (details in the file)

ME 525 Project Design of an All-Glass Coffee Table In this project you will design an all-glass coffee table similar to the one shown below. You will need to analyze how the different geometric parameters of a simple design affect the internal forces and moments for different loading conditions, and then come up with your own design and dimensions. Your final coffee-table design should be “production-ready,” and you should consider all relevant factors, including but not limited to: expected loads, safety, mass, price, comfort, and functionality. Consider the simple design shown in the figure above. • For a given geometry, find how the location of an applied force affects the internal forces and moments in each of part of the table. Use at least three different locations of the applied force. (1D problem) • Select three different loading scenarios (no load, typical load, maximum load) and find the internal forces and moments. In at least one case include at least one uniform distributed load. Make sure you account for the weight of the table in all scenarios. (1D problem) • Study how the length of the table affects the internal forces and moments – consider at least three different lengths. (1D problem) • Find the center of mass of the table. • Investigate at least one more aspect of the design. For this part, you will need to submit a short document which includes: • Title-There is no need for a title page! • Bulleted list of your findings/conclusion which refer to the plots supporting the findings (maximum half a page). Note that the email should describe your major conlcusions, and each bullet should discuss the findings from each of the following plots. • Two plots: shear force diagram and bending moment diagram. Each plot should show at least 3 different locations of a loading force. • Shear force and bending moment diagrams for 3 loading scenarios (combine the 3 scenarios on the same plot; use separate plots for the force and moment). Provide a plot or a schematic showing the load for each case. • One or two plots showing the relationship between the shear force/bending moment and the length of the table. • Schematic of the table with the center of mass identified on it. • At least one plot associated with one more aspect of the design.
