Class,I have been in a few situations where the verbal and nonverbal do not seem to quite line up and mixed signals are sent. One example that comes to mind, is a recent encounter with my nine-year-old daughter. (I have more career-minded experiences, but this one is fresh in my mind.) Now, she is a very sweet, good-natured little lady, but every now and then she has a moment- as all kids do. We were working together around the house, as we often do on Saturday's, and they were each given a basket of folded clothes to go put away in their rooms. After quite sometime, I called up the stairs to see if she had finished. She came down wanting to join the others in playing. I asked if she had completed putting all her clothes away neatly, to which she responded firmly, "yes," but her eyes did not meet mine but fell hastily towards the floor. I gently asked, "ALL of them?" and a bit more irritated she replied, "I said Yes!" I looked into her eyes deeply and she quickly looked away. So I kindly thanked her for finishing so quickly and let her go play. Then, being Momma, I went up to inspect. Naturally, as mamma's always know, it wasn't quite as she had said, and she had to come try again. But we got it right the second time, and I explained to her about her eyes telling a different story than her words. How important it is for us to communicate with our whole body, not just out words!
