Abstract

Currently, there is a huge and immense technological advancement across the globe. The
self-driving cars era is no very far. In the near future, the autonomous vehicles will be having a
huge demand in the travel and transport planning as many corporations and car manufacturers
are striving to implement the technology. This report presents a report of the interview that was
conducted among 20 IT experts on how the Google driverless technology works, importance and
some of the advantages of the technology as well as how it impacts the lives of the people and
the challenges in its implementation. From the study, it was found that the technology uses a
combination of software such as RADAR, LIDAR, and image exposure, Video Camera together
with hardware components such as a computer, rear monitor, inverter, switch, battery and
Topcon to perform its operation. The study also found out that technology will fasten the
transport process, reduce traffic accidents as well as enhancing user convenience. The study
found out that it influences the people living through aspects such as mobility, economy,
environment and energy, convenience as well as efficiency. Finally, the key issues that were
found out in the implementation and operation of the technology include legal liability, user
acceptance, and the policymakers’ acceptance.

CHAPTER ONE
1.1. Introduction
The Google driverless car technology combines all the information obtained from the
Google street view with the artificial intelligence software that incorporates the input data from
the video camera inside the car, RADAR sensor in the front of the vehicle, position sensor
mounted to one of the back wheels and a LIDAR sensor situated at the top of the vehicle which
aids to locate the position of vehicle on the map (Chowdary, 2018). Along with this software,
hardware components such as the REAR MONITOR, ROUTER, COMPUTER, SWITCH,
INVERTER, APPIANIX PCS, FAN, VELODYNE, BATTERY, and TOPCON are installed and
used in the car. Combining all these components makes it possible for the car to operate without
the presence of a driver.
1.2.Background
Google driverless car is simply an autonomous vehicle which can drive itself from one
place to another without the help of a driver. And one of the key issues that led to the
development of the driverless cars was the safety. The Google driverless car is often regarded as
a passenger vehicle, an autopilot, auto guided vehicle or an auto driver car. A large number of
the prototypes that have been built to undertake the automatic steering was based on the
magnetic monorails placed on the roads or the painted lines on the roads (Chowdary, 2018). The
founder of the Google driverless car technology was Sebastian Thrun. He invented this
technology when he was the director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligent laboratory after his
friends were killed by a car accident. The technology was launched and tested in 2010 with the
central goals of reducing traffic accidents, saving people time as well as reducing carbon

emission by changing car use. The hardware components of the Google driverless car technology
are the Light Detecting and Ranging (LIDAR) sensors, Radio Detection and Ranging (RADAR)
sensors, position estimator and video camera (Shivamogga, 2017). The software components
include the google street view and the Global Positioning System. (GPS)
1.3.Purpose
The primary purpose of this project is to analyze the Google driverless car technology,
how the technology works, some of the merits the technology and how it impacts the lives of the
people and some of the challenges that in implementation and operation of the technology. The
Google driverless car is often assumed by the majority of the people and they acknowledge that
transportation is a major contributor to our current civilization. It is quite obvious that there is
growing need for a more efficient, safer and balanced transportation system, and this growing
need and demand can be satisfied by implementation of the Google driverless...
