I’m Not Myself Today Final Assessment – 30% For this class, you need to demonstrate that you understand “worldviews” by explaining a worldview using appropriate terminology, organizing the worldview into coherent ideas, and comparing this worldview with other worldviews. In this class, we have studied Greco-Roman worldviews by look at their attitudes toward the self, as expressed through the works of Lucretius (The Nature of Things) and Apuleius (The Golden Ass). We have also studied contemporary worldviews of the self through academic research on the brain and behavior and video (David Eagleman, in-class prsentations). To demonstrate your understanding of world views, you must write a 5 to 6 page essay that examines the concept of “self” through multiple world views and answer the question: “What is the Self?” A paper copy of this is due during gen-ed week (the equivalent day of our last class). In this essay, you should identify and describe one Greco-Roman view of what constitutes the “self”, making sure to put this worldview in its historical context (use the lectures on the Greek or Roman world as appropriate). Be certain to discuss the implications of believing in this worldview of self on the people who lived at this time period. In other words, how might this particular worldview have impacted a person’s view and attitudes to the things s/he encountered, whether that is war, religion, politics, education, etc. Then, you should describe at least one contemporary perspective of what constitutes the self. The contemporary perspective must make use of at least two pieces of published scholarly research that examine the idea of self (this can be a journal article such as the ones used in the presentations, a book, an ebook – peer reviewed publications). It is recommended that you find sources that approach the contemporary view of self in a similar way (biological, psychological, performative, created, narrative, experiential, etc.). In describing the contemporary worldview of the self, make sure to discuss the implications or importance of holding this world view. In other words, how might this particular worldview of self have impacted a person’s view and attitudes towards any number of things s/he encounters, such as religion, politics, education, etc. You should also find a way to connect the contemporary worldview with the ancient worldview by explaining how they correlate or disagree. Finally, you should express your own view of the self, by comparing and contrasting your own view with those of the ancients and other contemporary thinkers. You are welcome to agree or disagree with any work encountered, but should provide some evidence to support your arguments. The visit to the Phi Centre can be used as evidence, or you can find another way to explain your view. The essay will be graded on: • An ability to explain two different views of the self, an ancient perspective and a contemporary perspective. Appropriate terminology and appropriate sources are required. More worldviews does not necessarily make for a better essay. Focus only on one from the ancient world and one from the contemporary world. • An ability to connect these two world views, by explaining whether their approaches to self are contrasting or complimentary. • Depth of understanding of the context, importance, and implications of these two world views • Expressing a personal worldview • The use of appropriate sources and evidence to support your assertions. Direct quotations from the texts we have read are appropriate, but you need to explain them in your own words. • Organization, flow, expression, topic sentences, developed paragraphs • Grammar, spelling • Original and creative thinking • The overall essay Sample paragraph to show how to do proper citation style: The human brain is plastic, meaning parts of the brain physically change as they are used and atrophy as they aren’t. Brain plasticity is demonstrated in a study done by Wollett and Maguire on London taxi drivers. For this study, the researchers examined the brains of taxi drivers as they underwent navigational training over a period of two years (Wollet et al 885). The participants had MRIs taken before and after their final tests. Participants who spent a longer time working as taxi drivers had a mental map of the city stored in their brains (Wollet et al 885). As seen in the MRIs, the process of creating and storing these maps physically increased the tissue volume of the posterior hippocampus (Maguire et al 4402). Specifically the results demonstrate a correlation between time spent as a taxi driver and the size of the right posterior hippocampus and right anterior hippocampus (Maguire et al 4402). ** et al is an abbreviation that stands for “et alia” which means “and others” In Latin . It is used whenj there is a long list of authors for a particular journal article.
